In the words of Ferris Bueller, high school is "A little childish and stupid". Now I'm going to add another word to that list. Childish, stupid, and a bit archaic.
Archaic, is actually a word that describes a period of time where ancient art was unrealistic, stiff, and looked like it had nothing to do with the actual thing. Now, I am relating this to high school; and you can probably guess where I'm going with this.
Lets think... Unrealistic. High school is nothing like the real world. If you get bad grades, there's always next term. If you fail at your job, well, you cant really try again can you.
Don't even get me started on grammar. When and where are you going to look at the news paper and think, 'oh, theres the adjective clause,' and, 'I like how they used that helping verb!' ......... no. Your most likely never going to say those things. Ever. EVER. Guess what my friend got told from her math professor uncle? When she was in Geometry, she was just slaving away at her math homework. Proofs to be exact. He walks in and says," hey whatcha workin' on?" and when he sees what she's been doing for the past hour, he says, "Proofs? those are worthless. You will never use those ever again in school, and we math people don't even use them." That my friends came from a math professor. Really? I went through half a term bleeding out my eyes because I was so tired of proofs, to find out that you never use them again? WOW. Nice going math teacher.
Now, you also get that whole lecture of, you need to learn how to learn! Well you know what? I want to learn how to learn, learning something thats actually useful. From a students perspective, I cant help but wonder how much trash they make us learn that we never actually use. Unrealistic.
Stiff.... Lets talk about those really super deep writing prompts you get. You know the ones about littering... and after school activities.... and school uniforms.... I think in my entire English experience, the only deep writing prompt I ever had was about the book I read over the summer. Other than that, every writing prompt is either, 'the principal at your school...' or 'some members of the PTA have decided...' It's just dry. and about nothing you care about. I get better writing prompts in History. Actually, the best writing prompts I've ever had have been in History. Write about your feelings on George Washington. After learning about him, I did write an essay on that. A stinking good one. I even got a smiley face from my teacher.
If your going to try to make high school kids write about something, make it not about school. Lets just venture away from the school building; because life, regardless of what teachers think, doesn't always happen in a classroom. Don't make things stiff and unimportant.
Can you see yet why I think school is getting a little fake? Your not going to be writing about school uniforms as a journalist. Ya. And no, I'm sorry math teacher. I really am taking this class to get through high school. I really don't want to be a math professor. Interior design does not involve trig. Art teacher, your still cool with me. History teacher, your still awesome. English, math, and science teachers, we need to talk.
